Getting started with Sokoban

Choose a round of Sokoban and settle into its rules. Push every crate onto a target. Look at what changes after your first action. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Look at what changes after your first action.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Try a more deliberate round

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Make the next step deliberately.

What counts as success

Push every crate onto a target. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. The example below illustrates a decision.

Making your moves

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Input guidance

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

Put the rules into context

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Notice the change in the playing area.

Keep this in mind

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Check the rule before repeating the action. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
