Nim: how a round works

Nim gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Read the objective before making your first input. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

A small practice goal

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Keep the objective visible.

Aim for this result

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

The order of play

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

Learn from a sample situation

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Choose a deliberate next step.

Keep this in mind

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Check the rule before repeating the action. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
