Memory Pairs: how a round works

Read the aim of Memory Pairs, then make your first move. Match all eight pairs. Your result is the number of two-card turns used. Look at what changes after your first action. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Use the example below to understand a decision.

One thing to notice as you play

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your objective

Match all eight pairs. Your result is the number of two-card turns used. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Take a moment to understand the current position.

From the start of a round

  1. Turn over any face-down card.
  2. Choose a second card. Equal symbols stay visible.
  3. Unequal cards turn back after a short pause.
  4. Continue until every pair is visible.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

Try this example

Seeing a star at the top left and another star in the bottom row gives you a matching pair on a later turn. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Notice the change in the playing area.

Where a round can go wrong

You cannot turn a third card while a mismatched pair is still being shown. Compare the situation with the worked example. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
